IF you thought tennis was only for the summer months, you would be wrong, especially if you are a junior member of Usk Tennis Club.
Training with coach Sean Jones and Aspire Tennis Academy goes on throughout the long winter months, as well as tournaments for young players and league fixtures for adults.
And all that hard work and enthusiasm pays off, with three of the younger members of the club doing particularly well lately, with wins in their age category in a string of tournaments.
Nine-year-old Ada Williams won the Cowbridge Open, and retained her Welsh Champion title for the second year running.
Henry Wyatt, aged eight, won the Newport Open in his age group, and Solomon Green won the Newport Welsh Tour, and was runner-up in the Under eight category, despite only being five years old!
Sean said: "All three players have shown great effort in training and the results are proof of their hard work.
"Many more of our juniors from very young through to teenagers are getting some impressive wins and achieving very high rankings, so it’s a fantastic time to be involved in tennis, and we are looking forward to even greater things as the year progresses.’
He went on: "With upgrading of the courts from a hard surface to Tiger Turf nearly complete, there isn’t a better time to dust off your trainers, pick up your racquet and join the club!"
The Mill Street-based club are gearing up to officially open their four new synthetic all-weather grass courts with the Usk Open Tennis Tournament from Friday to sunday, May 23-25.
There will be five events on offer – men's and ladies' singles, men's and ladies' doubles and mixed doubles.
