THE triathlon season may be winding down, but club members are still trying hard on water and land, reports KELLY SALTER.

On Sunday, Monmouth Tri Club member Jak Smith aced one of the last big races of the tri season at the Ironman 70.3 Weymouth.

Coming an impressive ninth overall on a rather hot day, Jak was fourth out of the water and fourth in his 25 to 29 age group.

The course included a 1.9km swim in Weymouth Bay, followed by a 90km bike ride though the Dorset countryside, and finished with a 13.1-mile run, ending along the town’s esplanade.

Meanwhile clubmates Phil Tilley and Kelly Major competed in the last South West Maritime Series Tri sprint triathlon at Cromhall quarry in Gloucestershire.

Both enjoyed a warm 750m swim in the quarry, though temperatures dipped sharply towards 12C on the 18km bike and 5km run.

Kelly finished in 1.31.13 for 14th out of 32 while Phil finished second in his age category.
