Monmouth Town welcomed Lucas Cwmbran in their 10th game of the season and hoped to repeat their previous two victories against the visitors and bounce back from their narrow cup defeat to Pill in last weekend’s game reports James Townley.

The Kingfishers started well, with opportunities from corners and free kicks, before they opened the scoring with an early goal in the first 11 minutes of the game, thanks to a well worked corner, scored by Ashley Ford.

Monmouth continued their threat with more opportunities being offere d to the team repeatedly through persistent pressure, before George Goulingay increased the hosts lead thanks to Jacob Perella’s assist.

Lucas Cwmbran’s first real threat at goal was stopped by Daniel Keane in goal, who made an excellent claim of the ball in a high-pressure situation. The half time whistle blew, and it was the hosts who held the advantage and looked to extend their lead in the final 45 minutes.

It didn’t take long after the referee got the second half underway, for Monmouth to add a third goal to their lead, after Dan McDonald set Gouldingay up for his second of the match. Another corner masterpiece from Monmouth saw Rob Laurie give the Kingfishers a four-goal lead, as the hosts scored two goals in four minutes of play.

With half an hour left and the game now seemingly put to bed, Monmouth won yet another corner which saw MacDonald make it five, a truly dominant display from the hosts. The visitors then made clever use of a well worked attack and scored their first of the game, ending Monmouth’s hopes of a clean sheet.

With 19 minutes left of play and some changes made by Monmouth, the team continued on, and it was MacDonald who scored the final goal of the game with a beautiful volley after a pass from Lamin Ndure.

The Kingfishers held off Lucas Cwmbran from scoring a second until the final whistle, to secure a well earned three points.

Monmouth Town are now eighth in the league table and their next match will be home against Lliswerry AFC in the fourth round of the Gwent Premier League County Motors Challenge Cup this coming weekend.
