Workmen have begun to widen the road in St Thomas’ Square by taking over three feet off the roundabout on either end.
The Beacon has been informed that the work is being done as part of the active travel plans for the town which began with the widening of the pavement in the Drybridge and Wonastow Road area.
We spoke to the workmen who said that the chevrons were being moved back behind the flower bed and the blue mar
At the centre of the roundabout is an historic Cross. Originally mediaeval, and also known as Overmonnow Cross, the cross was reconstructed in 1888 and has been classed as a Grade II listed structure since 15 August 1974.
They said that it was to make negotiation of the roundabout easier .
A Monmouthshire County Council spokesperson said: "The work at the St Thomas Roundabout is part of the Wonastow Active Travel scheme development. The work is being completed to ensure a compliant Active Travel footway between Drybridge St and Old Monnow Bridge and to ensure that larger vehicles can manoeuvre the roundabout without driving over a kerb or onto the roundabout.
“No planning application was needed to complete the work at the roundabout. The work has been passed through the Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance (WelTAG)."
