THE Beacon have contacted the county council for a response on the work currently being undertaken at St Thomas’ s roundabout in Monmouth to make it smaller.

A Monmouthshire Council spokesperson said: "The work at the St Thomas Roundabout is part of the Wonastow Active Travel scheme development.

“The work is being completed to ensure a compliant Active Travel footway between Drybridge St and Old Monnow Bridge and to ensure that larger vehicles can manoeuvre the roundabout without driving over a kerb or onto the roundabout.

“No planning application was needed to complete the work at the roundabout. The work has been passed through the Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance (WelTAG)."

The active travel pavement widening scheme has been ongoing for more than four months, with three-way traffic lights outside Drybridge House and now the roundabout works causing delays.

The continued water upgrade, which recently saw Monnow Street closed to traffic for more than a month, alongside recent closures in St Mary’s Street, St John’s Street and Glendower Street, has also caused months of misery for motorists, with Agincourt Street off the main square currently closed as well.

The whole length of the pedestrianised Church Street has also been dug up, with traders there and along Monnow Street reporting having to reduce their hours or shut all day owing to loss of trade.

Meanwhile, the landslip on the A40 dual carriageway heading out of Monmouth still remains unresolved four months on, with traffic limited to a single lane.
