MONMOUTH School’s 1st XV rugby team claimed a 33-20 victory over Malvern in the annual Border Shield clash at Sixways Stadium in Worcester, showcasing resilience and teamwork.

The anticipated fixture saw them overturn an eight-point half-time deficit to claim the trophy in one of the top rugby venues in the country.

The opening exchanges were dominated by Malvern, with their forwards putting the Welsh side under pressure early on, with first-half tries from Regan Jones and Brogan Leary giving them a 15-7 lead at the break.

However, the Monmouth squad regrouped, emerging with renewed energy and focus.

And the second half belonged entirely to the men in brown and gold, with standout performances from Luke Daniels, who powered through the Malvern defence for two sensational tries, and captain Harry Dawes, whose clinical finishing sealed a pivotal score that swung the momentum firmly in Monmouth’s favour.

Monmouth’s travelling supporters, numbering two coachloads of students and staff, provided electric encouragement throughout the match, further fuelling the team’s efforts.

The Border Shield is an annual fixture between Haberdashers Monmouth School and Malvern College,, which is steeped in tradition and a highlight of both schools’ sporting calendars, drawing significant support from students, staff, and alumni.

Director of HMS Sports Academy and former Wales scrum-half Richie Rees praised the team, saying: "What an incredible display of resilience and teamwork. This victory epitomises the spirit of Monmouth rugby."

Skipper Harry added: “This was a complete team effort. We were down, but never stopped believing. The crowd gave us that extra push to get over the line—it’s a victory for all of us.”
