IT proved three wins from three for in-form Rockfield Rovers on Saturday, as they comfortably beat Sudbrook CCFC 2nds 5-0 to close the gap to East Gwent 2 leaders Severn Tunnel to two points, reports JACOB DEIGHTON.
The game started evenly with both sides defending well and struggling to break each other down.
But Rockfield opened the scoring on the 25-minute mark through a penalty from Ben Johnson, who dispatched it with ease for a 1-0 lead at half-time.
And the goals started flowing in the second half after captain Max Goodridge doubled the advantage heading in a Joe Mudd free-kick.
Ben Wiggins then got in on the act via a direct free-kick which sent Rovers 3-0 up with 25 minutes still to play.
Johnson next got his second and Rockfield’s fourth after a sublime through ball from Wiggins, curling his effort around the onrushing keeper.
Wiggins then showed a brilliant bit of trickery in the final third to score the fifth and his second.
Next up for Rovers is an away trip to Caldicot Castle 2nds in two weeks time (Saturday, February 15).
Elsewhere in East Gwent 2, a Jack Coleman brace helped Wyesiders Tintern Abbey sink visitors Caldicot Castle 2nds 4-1.
The No 10 struck twice on four and 25 minutes to make it 2-0, and it was 3-0 at the break after Ryan Meredith added a third three minutes before half-time.
Castle hit back with a goal 10 minutes into the second period, but deep in stoppage time, substitute Evan Fisher added a fourth to seal the deal.
Also in EG2, third-placed Underwood thrashed hosts Portskewett & Sudbrook 10-2.
But Chepstow’s Thornwell R&W 2nds missed out 6-3 at Caldicot Castle 1sts in EG1, leaking three goals in the last three minutes after Logan Jones had levelled with his second goal with half an hour to play, following a 2-2 leveller right on half-time from Sam Schroepfer.
