The next Wye Valley Music concert at 3pm on Sunday, April 13th in St. Briavels Church, is a celebration of music for oboe and piano across three centuries played by two outstanding young performers. In 2020, Ewan Millar won the woodwind final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, advancing to the Grand Final. Of his performance, the Guardian commented: ‘exemplary, a richly shaded account.’ Since then, Ewan has beenperforming as a soloist in recitals around the UK and playing with leading orchestras and ensembles. Earlier this year, he won the Wind, Brass and Percussion category of the Royal Over-Seas League competition, and will be in the competition final at the Wigmore Hall in July. Rising Welsh star Tomos Boyles is rapidly carving out a career as a young and exciting concert pianist, with a ‘romantic flair and passion that only comes from intense involvement’ (Carol Nixon, LMC). Tomos recently won first prize in both the Urdd (Youth) Eisteddfod and the Wales International Piano Festival solo categories, as well as the prestigious Blue Ribband at the National Eisteddfod. His upcoming concerts include a chamber recital at Sinfonia Smith Square and a solo recital at the Wigmore Hall. Ewan and Tomos will present a contrasting range of works, including baroque pieces by JS Bach, CPE Bach and Marcello; sonatas by 19th romantic composers Robert Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn; and evocative works from the early 20th century by Gerald Finzi and Lily Boulanger.
