Following her campaign for road safety in Caldicot, where local resident Toby was recently hit by a car, Catherine Fookes MP has been contacted by residents in Devauden raising concerns about a dangerous stretch of road in the village.
During her visit to Devauden, Catherine met with local resident Rebecca and others, who shared their worries about poor visibility and speeding. Rebecca highlighted that her children have nearly been knocked over while crossing the road and that older residents walking to the village hall are also at serious risk.
Residents have been campaigning for a safe pedestrian crossing for some time. After seeing the situation firsthand, Catherine is offering her full support and has written to both Monmouthshire County Council and the Welsh Government to push for urgent action.
"I witnessed first-hand the dangerous speeds of some vehicles passing through the village," said Catherine. "Despite a 20mph limit, many drivers continue to ignore it. The community is absolutely right to ask for stronger and more permanent safety measures, including a crossing, clearer road markings, and better signage."
In her letter to the Monmouthshire County Council, Catherine welcomed the Council’s proposed improvements to road markings and speed limit signage, believing it will help improve road safety in the area. She also urged for more to be done to make the area safe for families, children, and older residents.
This call for action in Devauden is part of a wider concern about road safety across Monmouthshire, with residents from other villages such as Llansoy and St Arvans also raising similar issues.
Catherine is encouraging both the Police to monitor speeding in villages and Monmouthshire County Council to continue to implement stronger road safety measures across all of these communities. Ms Fookes urges anyone concerned about dangerous roads in their area to get in touch at [email protected] or call 01291 200 139.
