A Monmouth man has been jailed after sending sexual messages to someone he believed was a 12-year-old girl, but who was actually a police officer operating a decoy account.

60-year-old Alan Lewis, of Rolls Avenue, appeared at Cardiff Crown Court after pleading guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

Officer in the case, PC Simon James said: “Alan Lewis was arrested in January last year, after Gwent Police received information that he had engaged in sexualised conversations online with someone he believed was a 12-year-old girl.

“The profile was in fact a police officer, using a decoy account and Lewis pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and has since been sentenced to more than six years in prison.

“Gwent Police is committed to investigating the exploitation of children to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”
