A local volunteer has helped bring people together through a walking group that encourages socialising and enjoying nature.
Simon Jones first launched the group in 2018 through his ‘Wye Valley Walks’ page, offering a space for people to connect while exploring the area. In April 2022, he set up ‘Wye Valley Social’ - organising regular Thursday evening walks after work.
Following a major relaunch from Simon in January, the group has grown significantly and gone “from strength to strength.”
Participation has risen from just 5-6 people per walk to a thriving community of 1,400 members, with 12-15 people joining most Saturday walks.
For safety and to respect others enjoying the countryside, Simon has capped each session at 15 participants.
“The whole ethos is to make it fun and achievable,” explained Simon.
The group offers a variety of walks, from leisurely strolls around the town to more challenging eight-mile hikes in the mountains, catering to different fitness levels and interests.
Simon has completed various training courses to enhance his personal skills and improve the experience for those joining the walks.
He is passionate about the benefits of the outdoors, saying: “I’m a big believer in getting out in the outdoors - it’s good for you and your health, as is walking and talking.”
All walks are free to join, and each year, Simon also runs a free navigation course and a history walk in Monmouth.
“We are a very friendly group and lots of people have become friends through the group over the years,” said Simon.
The group has explored the Wye Valley and its surrounding areas, often venturing into the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons/Bannau Brycheiniog for more challenging hikes.
To take part, walkers must have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) tag and wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for the terrain.
