The Rolls of Monmouth achieved another crushing home victory when they took on the challenge of a strong Langland Bay Golf Club team on Saturday 6th April.
March's weather-postponed match away to Monmouth Golf Club set back The Rolls team's preparation for the visit of Langland Bay but team coach Geoff Walsh's tactical pairing changes and inspiring motivation laid the foundations for a deserved five and one victory over the visitors.
There was an early stutter when the usually reliable club captain Mike Maguire and his promoted partner, hero of the recent victory over Ross-on-Wye Peter Woodrow, spectacularly collapsed in the opening fourball by three and two to Mike Price and David Sparks.
Maguire claimed that he was acting as a good host in allowing the visitors a sole win and emphasised that it was the taking part that was important but he knows that with many eager and ambitious squad players waiting on the sidelines, automatic selection for the next match is not guaranteed.
New pairing of Stephen Lewis and Roger Lord justified their selection with a two and one triumph over the highly-rated Steve Bond and Russell Halliday of Langland Bay.
Lord's consistent play kept the Rolls pair in contention throughout and Lewis' steady nerve in sinking a putt of possibly 18 feet on the 17th secured the point.
Alastair Beedie, another rising star from the Ross victory paired up with in form Adrian Clark to sweep aside the challenge of Owen Price and Sam Hixson, while senior stalwart Tim Barker, admirably coping with play off the long championship tees, joined forces with father Trev Curphey to secure a closely fought win over Langland's low handicap banker pairing of Brian Owen and David Evans.
Local lumberjack, Richard Gable was deftly paired with Anglo-Chinese trade expert Luke James and the combo rewarded their coach's belief in them by defeating James Ryan and Keith Fletcher by a margin of two and one.
The ace in the pack was the coach's decision to persuade Monmouth's specialist endodontist Dave Guppy to return to the fairways from premature retirement to partner him in the anchor match.
After an understandably shaky start following such a long lay off, Guppy reached the heights of his earlier playing heyday in the middle part of the match and the pair ran out comfortable five and three winners.
Walsh claimed the result further proved that positive leadership and motivation could inspire the highest level of performance from mediocrity.
Although undefeated, he emphasised that they were taking one match at a time and the forthcoming visit across the Severn to The Kendleshire Golf Club may still prove to be a bridge too far.
