HENLEY Royal Regatta winner Violet Holbrow-Brooksbank will be looking to emulate GB's Olympic medal-winning stars in Canada next week, when the Wye Valley rower races at the combined World Championships.
The event in St Catherines will see racing for medals in non-Olympic class senior events, U23s and U19s, with former Monmouth Comprehensive pupil Violet looking to better the silver she won in the junior girls' coxless four on the Paris Olympic lake last year.
Having made a clean sweep of all the top UK titles in the girls' quadruple sculls with her Wycliffe crew in 2024, this time she'll be racing with two blades in the U19 girls' double sculls with Molesey Boat Club's Olivia Cheesmur.
And she'll be returning to North America later in the year after winning a place at top rowing university Washington in Seattle, the home of 'The Boys in the Boat', whose legendary exploits winning the 8s at the 1936 Olympics have been turned into a hit film directed by George Clooney.
Other Welsh rowers in the team include Toby Lassen in the U23 8, who won gold in the same boat last year, and 18-year-old National Schools' singles champion Elliot Donovan-Davies, who has remarkably been picked for the U23 men's quad scull despite his youth, plus Emily Downing in the U19 girls' 8 and Catherine Gardner in the U19 girls' quad.
Meanwhile, Monmouth RC alumni George Coates helped the Wales junior men's quadruple scull race to Home Countries Regatta glory at Strathclyde Park in Glasgow.
Having suffered a boat malfunction in the 2k race when in contention in the closing stages, they launched out for the 500m sprint determined to make amends.
And teamed with Hereford Cathedral's Archie Farquharson, King's Worcester's Josh Laverack and Tideway Scullers' Indiana Regan, he powered to victory by 1/2L from England, 3/4L from Ireland and 2L from Scotland.
Wales also secured victory in the men's pair through world junior gold medallist Osian James and Llandaff RC club mate and Henley Royal winner Kai Schlottman, who stormed past the Irish duo in the closing stages to win by 1/2L.
And there were also wins for Miguel Ferreira de Lima in the PR3 singles by 24 seconds from Scotland, and Llandaff club mate Rebekah Knight by 2L from the hosts in the women's PR3 singles.
Monmouth Comprehensive duo Seren Van der Horst and Eleanor Lawrence-Preston also impressed in the junior girls' pairs, racing home second behind England and a length ahead of Ireland.
Monmouth School’s George Whittal-Williams and Max Hole also helped the boys’ coxless four to second behind England.
There were also runner up spots for Wales in the junior women’s quadruple scull over 2k and 500m, Indiana Regan in the junior men’s singles, the junior women’s double sculls, and the men’s and women’s PR3 singles sprints.
Twelve Wye rowers launched out for Wales in all, with Monmouth School’s Ben Jennery, William Latheron and Patrick Stubbs joining their club mates for third in the sprint junior men’s 8s, as well as some racing in the junior 2k eight and coxed four, which finished fourth.
Monmouth School for Girls’ Ailsa Whitehead and Freya Berglund also took third in the girls’ coxless four, with the former joining Van Der Horst and Lawrence-Preston for thirds in both junior women’s 8s races.
Monmouth RC’s Taryn Birkett also steered the women’s senior eight and coxed four to fourths.
