YOUNG rowers went the extra mile to keep their school club cruising to success, raising vital funds through a half marathon biathlon fundraiser.

Some 70 students from Monmouth Comprehensive School Boat Club took part in the event and everyone who participated completed the 13.1-mile half running, half rowing challenge, crossing the line at Monmouth Rowing Club from where they boat, inside four hours.

And they did so after proudly representing their club – one of a handful of state schools that row – at the National Junior Sculling Head on the London 2012 Olympic lake, where they joined a 600-boat fleet.

Head coach Matt Royston said: “The event was a great reflection of the effort and commitment the students have to their training and also the desire to challenge themselves.

“The idea of our biathlon was inspired by our vice-captain Nanci Edwards who wanted to do something different and unique to help fundraise money for the rowing club.

“While a traditional biathlon might include swimming or cycling, our biathlon had the twist of rowing and running, which makes up the majority of our training.

“The event brought all squads together, which for a club of our size is rare. But more than that, the event itself could only happen with the support of our amazing parents.

“We had parents marshalling the running route to the Biblins and back, as well as providing food when the students completed the biathlon.

“This coming together of both students and parents goes to show that there is more to the club than just the boats.

“This club brings together a wide variety of people and backgrounds for a unique cause.

“The club not only inspires students to be the best rowers they can be, but teaches them skills which will be with them for life.

“The hardwork and dedication of all our students is something to admire as their ambition has no limit. “
