OLYMPIAN rowing mum Mathilda Hodgkins-Bryne launched out for GB for the first time since the Tokyo Games at last week's European Championships in Hungary.
She and Wales cap Becky Wilde had to settle for B final victory and seventh, but will benefit from the racing ahead of the final Olympic qualifying regatta in Switzerland in three weeks' time.
The St Weonards world medallist is bidding to become only the second mother to make a GB Olympic rowing team after double gold medallist Helen Glover, having given birth to son Freddy in 2022.
Mathilda returned to racing last year, taking singles bronze behind NZ Olympic champion Emma Twigg at the Amsterdam international regatta, but wasn't allowed to race for GB and instead rowed for Henley-based club Upper Thames.
But having won through the trials this year ahead of last year's GB double, she has been given the chance to qualify the boat for Paris with Wilde in Lucerne.
The duo came third in their heat 2L behind Norway and Romania, with only the winners going straight into the final.
Their time was faster than all but the Lithuanian winners of the other heat, but then needing to finish in the top four in the repechage, they found themselves trailing in fifth early on.
And despite keeping in touch, they couldn't quite break through, missing out by just under a length to Switzerland and the Czechs in third and fourth.
That put them in the B final where they stormed home well ahead of Hungary in second in 7.42.00, a time which would have won bronze in the A final.
All eyes now turn to the final Olympic qualifying regatta, with only two places left at Paris, and GB set to face the Swiss and Czechs alongside others.
Former world U23 doubles champion Mathilda - who raced in the quad in Tokyo alongside sister Charlotte – has been there before though, racing the single for experience in 2016 when she was given a late chance to contest for a place in Rio, although not quite making it that time.
