KINGFISHERS full-back Jack Meredith has been selected as Player of the Round for the JD Welsh Cup Round One – ahead of players from bigger clubs.
Meredith’s Gwent Premier League side caused an upset as they triumphed 2-0 over a Newport City side pushing towards the top end of the JD Cymru South, two flights above.
An FAW spokesperson said: “Against a Steelmen attack packed with talent, the 20-year-old was instrumental in Monmouth keeping a clean sheet while also proving a key outlet going forward.”
After Dan MacDonald had scored Monmouth’s opener in the 67th minute, Meredith provided the assist for Ebrima Ndure’s goal eight minutes later to clinch a place in Round Two.
And the Kingfishers will host Gwent Premier rivals Pill a week on Saturday (October 19), as they target a spot in the third round.
While the 1st XI didn't playa the weekend, Josh Maksimovic scored a first half hat-trick for the 2nds at home to Undy 3rds, as a 6-3 win put them equal top of East Gwent One.
Maksimovic opened the scoring on 15 minutes before their county rivals levelled five minutes later, but was on target again on 32 minutes for 2-1.
In a mad six-minute spell, Undy equalised again within three minutes only for Josh to hit his hat-trick two minutes later for 3-2, followed within a minute by a David Elworthy strike for 4-2.
Mathew George added a fifth for the Kingfishers on 53 minutes, but Craig Lewis missed a penalty six minutes later before Undy reduced the deficit to two goals with 20 minutes left.
But Monmouth had the final word, Ben Robb firing a sixth with eight minutes to play, drawing them level on points and goal difference with Caldicot Castle, who lost 2-1 at home to Sudbrook CC.
Elsewhere, Chepstow Town 1st XI fell to a 1-0 loss away to bottom half Tredegar Town in the Ardal South East League, leaving them sixth, while their 2nds crashed 5-0 at home to Newport Corinthians in the SE Reserves League.
Fresh off two consecutive wins that took them off the bottom of Gwent Premier 2, Usk faced the challenge of hosting runaway leaders Alway on Saturday.
And although they lost 3-0, it was a combative enough performance to suggest they can push up the table in the weeks to come.
Chepstow top half division rivals Thornwell R&W also missed out 3-2 at home to second-placed Cwmcarn Athletic, taking a 2-0 lead through strikes from Owain Westerman (20 minutes) and Owen Badham (25) only to be overhauled by an eighth-minute first half stoppage time goal and two second half efforts.
Usk Town 2nds were well beaten though, 7-1 away to Penygarn & Trevethin in Gwent Central 2, Mark Davies with the second half consolation.
Tintern Abbey lost out 5-3 at home to Portskewett & Sudbrook in East Gwent 2, trailing 3-0 after 18 minutes, before edging the second half thanks to a Taka Yamagata goal (48) and a Jack Coleman brace (59, 88).
Redbrook Rovers gave top-two hosts Soudley a good challenge before going down 3-2 in North Gloucestershire One, Ieuan Thomas and Tom Maxted their scorers.
But the 2nds won 4-3 at home to Broadwell A in NG2, Dan Bodenham, Griffin Rowe, Brandon Robbins and Jayden Makondora the marksmen.
