HIGH-flying Chepstow Town were one of very few teams to play on Saturday, winning 3-1 at home to Ardal South East basement boys Treharris to close the gap on leaders Treowen to three points.

But the town's snow-hit racecourse the Jockeys take their nickname from wasn’t so lucky, its meeting called off as “unsafe” on Sunday after just two races.

Treharris actually went in front on 24 minutes before Chepstow came good in the closing stages, Nathan Rose levelling on 72 minutes, and Josh Parsons (82) and Sonny Lewis (85) sealing the points, with a trip to Goytre next on Friday night (January 10).

Chepstow 3rds also hosted Caldicot Castle in the Benevolent Cup, but lost 5-4 after stoppage time drama, going 4-3 in front after 90 minutes only for the visitors to level from the penalty spot and then fire the winner.

But elsewhere, fixtures were wiped out by frozen pitches. Monmouth Town's Gwent Senior Cup home tie against RTB Ebbw Vale was postponed to Saturday (January 11).

And on the pitch next door, the referee pulled the plug on Monmouth RFC's WRU East home match with Pontypool United after a pitch inspection.

The visitors posted: "Arrived at Monmouth and unfortunately the referee has deemed the pitch unsafe due to frozen pitch...

“Sorry all... Big thanks for all who travelled hell bent on keeping game on... Without doubt correct call by referee as large swathes of the pitch dangerous and the welfare of the players would have been compromised.

"Thanks to the Robin Hood pub who helped us get over frustrations."
