PETER Bere’s continuation of Monmouthshire through the ages this week is called “The Receding Lake”.
He said: “The Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic). Intrepid human settlers ‘hunter-gatherers’, camping beside Monmouth’s Glacial Lake where the land was still marshy and plant life was slowly turning into peat. This was a time when Mammoths still roamed the land. The remains of some of the prehistoric animals are preserved in the dry conditions of local caves and in the wet and boggy early conditions in the lower parts of the new valleys. The fossilised bone remains of such animals as rhinoceros, cave bear and the hyenas, which were dragged into the caves, have been found.”
