Monmouth’s Mayhem Youth Theatre Group will be bringing a touch of 1920s New York with its Speakeasys , gangsters and molls when they perform the stage version of the ever popular film Bugsy Malone this week at Monmouth School for Girls .

The 1976 film which made household names out of its two stars Scott Baio and Jodie Foster tells the story of the suave sophisticated Bugsy Malone who gets involved in a gang war between Fat Sam Stacetto and Dandy Dan which escalates when the latter gets hold of a new weapon, the splurge gun.

This weapon is slowly but surely wiping out Fat Sam’s Gang .Bugsy though has girl trouble in the form of a wannabe star Blousey Brown and Tallulah who wishes for a better life and has a soft spot for Bugsy .

This production which promises proper splurge guns and a real life Bugsy pedal car, marks the debut of Mayhem’s Junior group which was set up to complement the multi award-winning Senior group.

Creative director Andrew Griffiths said: “In the middle of the Covid lockdown, I decided that I wanted to fulfil an ambition by forming a younger Mayhem group within the town.

“At the time I had no idea where this group was going to take me or even if it was going to work.

“What I couldn’t have forseen was the extraordinary talent that has been unearthed by this group and we’re extremely proud of the loyalty and focus of these youngsters, many of whom attended the first rehearsal in June 2021.

“You must come and see for yourself what a depth of talent there is in this town. You wont be disappointed. “

Mayhem , which has very healthy mixture of children from a diverse variety of schools are performing Bugsy Malone this Friday, February 24, at 7.15pm and Saturday, February 25, with a matinee at 2.30pm and an evening performance at 7.15pm.

Tickets priced at £10 for adults and £6 for Under 16s are available at Handyman House or on the door.
