SIR, The new 21st Century Comprehensive School to be built in Monmouth will have the capacity for 1,600 pupils. At present, 1,623 pupils are taught at the school. With 370 new homes expected to be built at Wonastow, the new school plans should anticipate a growth in student numbers. When the new school buildings are complete in 2016/ 17, will we see demountable classrooms scattered around the site? On second thoughts, the demountable will give the experience of the traditional classroom situation, giving welcome relief from the noise from 'open space learning' in the 1970s at Wyesham and Osbaston Junior Schools. After a short time partition walls and doors were added to the interiors of the schools. I understand that Caldicot will have a new comprehensive school built concurrently with Monmouth. Parents at Caldicot were told of the plans in March, they rejected 'open space learning' and chose traditional classrooms. It is unfortunate that pupils do not have the mobility of the teaching staff, who can locate to a traditional school, if working conditions become unbearable. E M Williams (Monmouth)
