A LUXURY country mansion a stone’s throw from the world famous Rockfied Studios is back on the market for just over £3m.
Six-bedroomed Ancre Hill off Monmouth’s Rockfield Road, complete with outdoor swimming pool, tennis court, snooker room and 3.5 acres of sumptuous grounds, was originally put up for sale in 2019 as part of a £15m package with the owners’ award-winning Ancre Hill Estates vineyard.
But it is now on offer as a separate purchase for £3.15m, which could well suit a multi-millionaire rock star wanting to make the nearby studios his regular port of call.
The 18th century farmhouse dates back to the 18th century and has been recently renovated.
It has 360 degree views of the vineyard and Wye Valley and is described as the ideal family home.
Fine & Country Monmouth, who are handling the sale, say: “It’s in an outstanding location.
“Its grounds are immediately surrounded by award-winning organic and biodynamic vineyards, with an outdoor heated swimming pool set in a carefully curated, sheltered, walled Mediterranean garden all giving a real feeling of escapism.”
The house was built on the site of an early religious settlement established by Ancrerites in the 11th or 12th century, hence its name. Originally a Welsh longhouse, the property was altered in the Georgian period, in about 1820 and then remodelled in 1881 by a Monmouth solicitor.
The changes also included the addition of a second floor to provide servants’ quarters, while in about 1905, a single-storey billiard room was built on the side of the house.
Vendors Richard and Joy Morris say: “It’s got an ambience we can’t really explain. We walk in and it gives us a big hug.
“We are only the fifth family to live here since 1820 and it has made the most wonderful family home.”
It includes a large, beamed kitchen, dining and living room which extends along most of the back of the house, overlooking the swimming pool and the walled garden, plus orangery, with underfloor heating, electric roof blinds and automatic vents, which leads off from the kitchen and opens to a terrace which overlooks the Mediterranean garden and pool.
A main staircase leads up to the first floor bedrooms, including impressive a master suite with a separate dressing room and an en-suite bathroom with a Victorian cast-iron bath.
There is another en-suite bedroom and two further bedrooms each with access to their own bathroom.
A separate staircase leads up to the second floor, which has two spacious bedrooms, with oak floor boards and exposed oak trusses giving warmth and character. Both these bedrooms have en-suites.
Back downstairs, a door from the side porch opens to the former billiard room, now dominated by a full size Victorian snooker table.
The sale also includes a converted two-storey barn with kitchen area that could be used as a home office or leisure building or, subject to planning, could be converted to provide further accommodation.
It was originally offered with the vineyard, which produces some of the world’s best sparkling wine.
Ancre Hill Estates was named the Bollicine del Mondo in 2012 when its 2008 vintage was voted best white sparkling wine in the world.
