Residents and business owners in Usk have voiced concerns over rumours suggesting that Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) is planning to introduce car parking charges in the town. However, Llanbadoc and Usk Ward County Councillor Tony Kear has reassured the community that no formal proposals have been put forward at this stage.

MCC is currently conducting a countywide review of public car parking, including enforcement, through independent consultants. This review is ongoing, and no decisions have been made. A report on the findings may be available by late May or early June, but until then, there is nothing to review, consult upon, or implement.

A recent survey conducted by Usk Town Council received approximately 1,600 responses, with 93% of participants opposing the introduction of charges. This feedback, along with concerns raised by local businesses in the Usk Business Shops and Events Group, has been shared with MCC officers and consultants.

Councillor Kear has also highlighted several unique parking challenges in Usk, including the lack of parking for Bridge Street residents, the use of the South Car Park by HMP Usk staff, and the impact potential charges could have on the Memorial and Centennial Halls. He has assured the community that he is actively representing their interests and will closely review any recommendations that emerge from the MCC study.

“If any proposals come forward that suggest changes to the current free parking regime, I will ensure that residents and businesses are fully informed. This could include a public meeting if necessary,” said Councillor Kear.

Ultimately, any decisions regarding parking changes will be made by MCC’s 46 elected county councillors, following scrutiny and public consultation.

Councillor Kear has committed to keeping the community updated and encourages anyone with questions or concerns to contact him directly.
