The first phase of a Monmouth Town Council initiative, funded by Wye Valley National Landscape Sustainable Development Fund has brightened up Wyesham’s local pedestrian subway.

The project began with a grant of over £9,000 from the Wye Valley National Landscape (formerly AONB) and match funding from the Town Council, making a total budget of over £12,500.

Councillors felt strongly that the appearance of the subway was a deterrent for people using it as a safe passage under the dual carriageway and suggested that the painting of murals and improving the lighting within the subway would encourage use.

During half-term, talented artist Paul Shepherd (Walls by Paul) worked tirelessly to complete his mural design with the health & safety support of town councillors and volunteers.

Cllr Emma Bryn, county councillor for the Wyesham Ward described the task that was ahead of them:”The subway was neglected and worn, the lights were dim and broken, the gutters blocked and the walls dark and smelly. Unfortunately, Wyesham residents had to use this subway in order to access the town and so many were tempted to dodge the cars on the A40 instead, sometimes with deadly consequences.

“Thankfully with the cooperation of SWTRA and MCC, the dedication and hard work of the town council and a group of determined volunteers, the imagination of our youngsters, the financial backing of The National Landscapes (AONB) and the creativity of 'Walls by Paul' we now have a re-imagined subway that is a joy to behold. The lights shine bright, the mirrors gleam and the walls have been transformed into a visualisation of the living river Wye.”

Catherine Fookes, MP, who led the successful funding application to Wye Valley National Landscape’s Sustainable Development Fund added: “This helped make the fantastic project possible and I’m delighted that it was awarded the funding it deserves.

““The energy and dedication from Monmouth Town Council and the local community has been amazing”

Phase 2 will be completed in the new year, with an additional mural extending from the underpass. Keep up to date with the ‘Monmouth Town Council’ newsletter.
