Staff from Trellech Primary School scaled Pen-y-Fan to raise money for a defibrillator following a pupil’s life-changing diagnosis.
Over the Christmas break following illness and a stay at The Grange, one of the pupils was found to have Brugada Syndrome, a rare but serious condition that affects the way electrical signals pass through the heart.
The need for a defibrillator on the school site became a priority as part of the care plan that was put in place by the pupils’ cardiac team.
The charity committee, led by Emily Ward and Jessica Light, didn’t waste anytime leading the fundraising efforts and the walk was planned, a GoFundMe page was set up and the sponsorship and donations flooded in.
The team set off at 8am on a dry but chilly Sunday morning and reached the peak in just over an hour!
The team would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who supported them with the donations they made including local businesses Square Farm Shop, Robert Price Builders’ Merchants and Contact Radio Communications. A grant from the charity ‘Calon Hearts’ has also ensured the defibrillator will be on site very soon.
A spokesman for the school said: “Everybody who has donated has enabled the target amount to be exceeded, ensuring the purchase of the defibrillator, as well as funds to ensure its maintenance in the forthcoming coming years.
“We now have a radio communication system to enable staff to gain support when necessary in the event of an emergency at any location within the school and grounds. From the team at Trellech as well as the family a huge thank you for your support.”
