A SISTER bridge of Monmouth’s rare military Inglis Bridge across the Monnow at Vauxhall fields has also been awarded Grade II-listed status
The Inglis Pyramid Bridge that crosses the Basingstoke Canal in Aldershot pre-dates the Monmouth bridge.
But the local crossing is the only one of its kind still open to the public, despite access being limited to pedestrians since vehicle traffic was blocked in 2018.
Inglis bridges are described as 'masterpieces of military engineering' designed by WWI War Office engineer Charles Inglis.
Made of lightweight steel, they were easy to construct and could be reused.
The Aldershot bridge was built in WWI, with the Monmouth bridge constructed in 1931 by the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers, who are still based at the town’s Castle and on Vauxhall.
