A scheme to provide a safe space for children who feel upset or feel threatened walking through town is currently running throughout the town.

The Safer Spaces scheme is a sanctuary for youngsters to pop into a promises displaying the logo so that the shopkeeper can try to contact family or friends and was highlighted last week when a White Swan Court premises was a safe haven for a young person who was “visibly upset”.

Blessed Be Emporium managed to contact the mum after the child had left her phone at home.

Eirwen Rogers posted on social media that the child “had left her phone at home so couldn’t contact her parents as all her info was in her phone . She didn’t have any numbers to hand either . So I used the power of social media , contacted her mother and reassured my young guest until her mum arrived.”

She added: “A lot of businesses in Monmouth have these stickers in their windows but a lot of people are not aware of what they are for.”

Safer Spaces are for people who need help for whatever reason: Panic attack , anxiety, lost, feeling threatened.

“Find your nearest shop with one of these stickers and ask for help.”

She advised parents or carers to let your youngsters know there is this voluntary service in town .

She also said to have a phone number/ contact detail in a purse etc. “we can’t always rely on our phones that store all of our details.”
