CONCERNS have been raised over children’s road safety in Monmouth.

Catherine Fookes, AM candidate for Monmouth and Patrick Harkness, who is running for Drybridge ward councillor, have voiced their concerns over the need for a pedestrian crossing at Monmouth skatepark.

The pair believe a pedestrian crossing should be placed in the area to ensure the safety of those crossing the road.

Catherine Fookes said: “Children of all ages come here to use the skatepark, as a mother I’m concerned about children’s safety when crossing that busy road.

“It’s particularly dangerous to cross if you’re coming from Overmonnow or Drybridge.”

Patrick Harkness said: “The new Co-operative store and housing development is going to increase the volume of traffic in the area.

“Proper discussions need to be had about what would be best for pedestrian safety.”

Mrs Fookes has also shown her support to the petition to move Monmouth’s playground away from the nearby A40.

The petition, which has already received more than 200 signatures, seeks to ask Monmouth Town Council to reconsider the location and appearance of Monmouth’s playground.

Catherine said: “We have so many visitors to Monmouth. A better playground will be good for the high street and economy and would be a huge draw to locals and visitors alike.

“The playground is ultimately about child safety. I want more suitable, better facilities for Monmouthshire’s children.

“The noise of the traffic and the pollution near the playground is unacceptable and Monmouthshire’s children deserve better. Their needs should be taken into account.”

Rachel Jupp, who started the petition, voiced her concerns about access to the playground but was pleased by the influx of support the online petition has received.
