Outline plans for 110 homes on the Drewen Farm site at Wonastow are being put forward for consultation.

The site was allocated for residential development in the adopted Monmouthshire Local Plan and is the remaining phase of development of the land off Wonastow Road, which includes Kingswood Gate.

Proposed access to the site would be from Kingfisher Way on the Kingswood estate and Watery Lane

The Beacon reported over 10 years ago that 80 houses were proposed for the Drewen Farm site adjacent to the Kings Wood (Wonastow Road) estate in the Local Development Plan (LDP) submitted to the Welsh Assembly by Monmouthshire County Council in December 2012.

Inspector Siân Worden published her final report in 2014 on the soundness of the LDP, after the original report showed a shortfall of proposed dwellings in the county. Monmouthshire was expected to build 5,000 new houses by 2021.

Now, the Vistry Group has put the plan up for Pre-Application Consultation on their website, relating to an outline planning application for the development of 110 homes, including affordable housing, at Drewen Farm.

The site is 6.58 hectares and “is wholly located within the Wonastow Road Strategic Site, allocated in the adopted Monmouthshire City Council Local Development Plan (2011 – 2021),” according to the Vistry website.

The site would include public open space, recreation and play facilities, landscaping, drainage and other associated infrastructure.

The 110 homes proposed are in a range of sizes and types “suitable for people of varying lifestyles and ages” with at least 35 percent affordable housing provision, 3.2 hectares - almost half of the site - of open space, habitat and other green and blue features, a ‘Play on the Way’ naturalistic play equipment along green routes and a community growing area and orchard.

Vistry claims to be the biggest provider of affordable homes in the UK, “addressing the chronic undersupply of affordable housing”.

Their website says Vistry is a “5 star builder, with an established portfolio of high quality brands, including Bovis Homes, Linden Homes and Countryside Partnerships”.

However out of 109 reviews on TrustPilot (to August 2024), 95 percent of the reviews give the house builder a 1* rating.
