A PEDESTRIAN crossing on the Hereford Road in Monmouth could be installed later this year after the council received a grant of more than £40,000.
Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) has been awarded £41,000 for the provision of a controlled pedestrian crossing along Hereford, Road, Monmouth, as part of £25.9m in Local Transport Grants, announced by Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport Ken Skates last month.
The grant will allow designs for the scheme to be drawn out, with a spokesperson from MCC saying potential safety issues at the crossing would require “careful design”.
In 2011 proposals emerged for the installation of a zebra crossing near the Osbaston Road junction, after two drop kerbs and ‘build outs’ were installed. The controversial ‘build outs’ were removed in 2016 when the road was resurfaced.
A spokesperson from MCC said: “There has been a long-term desire to provide a crossing at this location and news of this funding is welcomed. It will allow MCC Highways engineers to carry out a detailed design including consultation.
“The site presents difficulties and will require careful design to overcome potential safety issues but engineers are confident that the final scheme can satisfy the requirements of the safety audit process.
“The scheme is programmed for design during the summer and implementation later in the year.”
