A prisoner who escaped from HMP Prescoed in January was found by police sitting on a motorbike in his Bristol home.
Brian Grady, a convicted murderer, escaped from the open prison near Usk on 19th January and was caught 20 days later after going on the run.
He was given a new two-year jail term after pleading guilty to escape at Newport Crown Court last Friday (8th March).
Grady was sentenced to life in prison in July 2003 after being convicted of murder and conspiracy to rob in what defence barrister Robert Duval called a "street mugging that went wrong".
The court heard Grady had spent time in 10 different institutions including Feltham Young Offenders Institute and Shepton Mallet before being transferred to Prescoed in September last year with a view to being released on parole in July 2014.
But on 19th January, at 11.45pm, the 26-year-old was seen walking out of the prison on CCTV before being picked up by a car driven by an accomplice.
Grady's cousin, 34-year-old Leanne Holt, has since been sentenced to eight months in jail after admitting assisting an offender.
Prosecutor John Warren said Grady was found on 3rd February in the living room of his home in Bristol "astride a motorbike".
Mr Duval said Grady was a "trusted prisoner" who had completed courses including GCSEs and NVQs in catering and fitness, and would have been due for parole in July 2014.
"He was a fitness instructor for younger offenders and doing remarkably well," said Mr Duval.
Fellow inmates allowed out on day release told Grady about an entry in the prison diary suggesting he was to be moved back to a more secure facility, Mr Duval told the court.
"He was devastated. He had been in prison from a young age and believed he had done everything he could to secure his release," added Mr Duval.
"He took it upon himself to contact a member of his family and simply walked out with a bag of clothes four hours later.
"The information was unverified and unchecked by him. It was a spontaneous response and an inappropriate one."
Grady has since been returned to the higher security Cardiff Prison.
Recorder David Aubrey, sentencing Grady to two years concurrent with his current sentence, told Grady he had caused "fear and apprehension to people who knew a criminal was at large".
"Under the cover of darkness you ran out of the open prison. You breached the trust placed in you," he added.
Grady will not now be eligible for parole until March 2015.
• Gwent Police are now searching for another prisoner missing from HMP Prescoed.
