THE A40 Dixton roundabout to Symonds Yat has been closed due to two fallen trees leaning on a standing tree, creating a hazardous situation that needs to be cleared near the carriageway.
Traffic was rerouted via the town centre, Monmouth’s Buckholt and the Wye Bridge , but there have been long delays all day.
At one point, two lorries travelling in opposite directions reportedly got jammed on the bendy Buckholt stretch, with vehicles avoiding the jam by driving along the narrow two-mile single track Manson Lane.
The A40 was due to be shut between today (December 10) to December 13 and December 16 to allow National Highways to install a contraflow which will provide their teams with a safe space to remove debris, clear vegetation and continue survey work, ensuring the A40 remains open in both directions.
During closures, clearly signed diversion routes will be in place with HGV and long-distance traffic diverted via the M5 and M4.
Local traffic: diversions via Abergavenny, the A465 to Hereford and then the A49 to Ross on Wye.
