MONMOUTH Cricket Club travel to promotion- chasing Netherton this Saturday in Division 2 of the Crusader Worcestershire County League. The Welsh outfit will be aiming to pick up vital points in their bid to safeguard their Division 2 status. Ninth-placed Monmouth will also be eager to avenge a heavy eight-wicket defeat which they suffered against Netherton in May. Netherton are now second in the division, 39 points behind table-topping Barnards Green, whom Monmouth defeated in their last league outing. Monmouth, sponsored by The Priory Nursing Home and Misbah Tandoori Restaurant, will certainly be hoping to produce a much better display against Netherton this time around. Back in May, Monmouth's batsmen were undone by Netherton's M. Clouston who bagged 7-44 as the hosts were shot out for 81 in a one-sided affair at the Sports Ground. Monmouth's low total, on that occasion, was never likely to test the Midlands club who cruised home in the 20th over for the loss of two wickets. Monmouth's scheduled home match against local rivals Wormelow last Saturday was washed out by the torrential rain which swept the region. For the second time in a month, all matches in the 14 divisions of the Worcestershire County League were rained off without a ball bowled. Monmouth Seconds will be hosting Netherton Seconds at the Sports Ground this Saturday in a Division 2 2nd XI top-of-the-table clash. Netherton Seconds are now second in the table, just one point adrift of table-topping Lye Seconds, while Monmouth are third. Monmouth Seconds, sponsored by Alchemy Wealth Management Ltd, battled out a losing draw when they travelled to Netherton on FA Cup final day. Monmouth's derby match against Wormelow Seconds at Kennel Field last Saturday was rained off. Meanwhile, Monmouth chairman Pat Baker would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who are sponsoring the club in 2007. He would particularly like to thank the main financial contributor to the club this season ? The Priory Nursing Home at Llandogo, near Monmouth. Baker is also pleased with the recognition of the England cricketer who will be the special guest at Monmouth's fund-raising dinner on Friday, November 2. Gloucestershire seam bowler Jon Lewis has been named in England?s 30-man provisional squad for the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in September. The dinner is being organised at the Blake Theatre and will help raise funds for the junior section of Monmouth Cricket Club. Tickets have now been printed for the event and are available by telephoning Pat Baker on 01600 713748 or secretary Mike Roberts on 01600 716447.
