A MONMOUTH doctor has swapped her stethoscope for sneakers as she prepares to take on one of the toughest running challenges in the UK.

40-year-old Alison Phillips, a partner at Chippenham Surgery, will take part in the Virgin Money London Marathon in April.

The mother of three from Llangarron joined the Spirit of Monmouth running club four years ago, but this is her first run at such a distance.

She aims to raise £2,000 for Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, after raising £800 in 2011 taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon.

"It is the only charity of its sort in Wales, but no one seems to know about it. They rely on donations to cover their £3.7million annual running costs and they do so much to help young people with life-limiting conditions.

"I have three children and thankfully they are all healthy. It is any parent's biggest wish for their children to have long and happy lives, but these children and their parents need help from Ty Hafan. If I can help even one child it will be worth it."

The GP has been training at every opportunity around the lanes in Llangarron with her collie dog, Ben.
