Held in the shadow of Raglan Castle, this year’s Llangattock ploughing match was yet another success for the ploughing society.
The match site at Pen y Parc Farm, provided by kind permission of Mr and Mrs N Turner, saw over 80 ploughing competitors take part, a record entry. A range of tractors and ploughs were on display ranging from vintage through to the latest reversible ploughs together with three horse ploughing teams. The overall champion was High Cut ploughman, Derek Needham from Norfolk.
With vintage and modern tractors competing in some challenging conditions, the event was definitely one to finish the season on!Homecraft and horticulture were mixed with sheep classes, children’s young handler competitions and the usual tug-of-war against a Willy’s jeep (the jeep lost).
Bill Powell from Cwmcarvan won the competition for the most interesting tractor with his Massey Ferguson complete with gold engine whilst Sarah Williams won the best turned-out tractor with her immaculate David Brown.
The livestock section was well-supported with a good entry of sheep judged by David Probert. Champion Commercial Sheep was shown by EW & A Saysell with the Reserve from Dale Radnor. In the Native Breeds, champion was Mark Taylor.
First prize in the young handlers was shared between Evan Parry and Ben and Sophie Greenhill. Results next week
