One of the first conservation projects undertaken in 2005 by the Village Alive Trust local buildings preservation trust was to save the dilapidated 1754 built Cwm Farm Grade II* listed cider house at Llangattock Lingoed, Abergavenny after an approach from the farmer, the late Harvey Marks. Harvey, who died on Christmas Day, 2021, had lived at the Cwm since 1945 after moving with his family at a young age from Coventry which had suffered blitz bombing raids. A bachelor, he enjoyed welcoming visitors to the farm to see the restored cider house with its ancient mill and press, baking oven and fire heated copper. The Village Alive Trust, which he supported, was able to gain grants to conserve the building. Conservation included rebuilding the gable end, replacing rotten roof timbers and repairing the loft steps with its dog kennel underneath and renewing the apple store floor. As Cwm Farm is in an area of designated footpaths Harvey often allowed passing walkers to view the cider house and held popular open days. Now the Cwm Farm, with its Grade II listed farmhouse and barn completing the U-shaped farmyard, is up for auction, on November 30th, along with the vestiges of an ancient perry pear orchard and a total of 25 acres. Harvey’s family want to give people a last chance to see the cider house and other buildings and are hosting Open Days on Saturday, November 11th and Sunday, November 12th from 11-4pm. Tea and cakes will be available and there will be a small display about the projects undertaken by the Village Alive Trust. A video of Harvey filmed by the Village Alive Trust’s past members, the late John Clarke and his wife, Cathy, will be shown in the farmhouse. Donations will be welcomed for the Village Alive Trust and St Cadoc’s Church at Llangattock Lingoed, in memory of Harvey. A footpath leads to Cwm Farm from the Grade 1 listed St Cadoc’s Church which was conserved with grant aid and features rare medieval wall paintings. Auctioneers R G and R B Williams and J Straker, Chadwick and Sons are handling the Cwm Farm sale in two lots.
