Our Community in Kindess awards scheme was launched two months ago with the main sponsors being Abergavenny Town Council who kindly sponsored several categrories.
And thanks to our readers who kindly sponsored people from all walks of life it meant our judges had a tough time choosing the winners.
Mayor Cllr Tony Konieczny commenting on the awards scheme said: “Abergavenny Town Council were pleased to be asked to sponsor The Community in Kindness Awards in conjunction with the Abergavenny Chronicle.
‘‘The onset of the Covid pandemic made life very difficult for all of us. Nevertheless, the community response was amazing, the level of volunteering soared.
‘‘We looked out for our neighbours, provided meals and support for our front-line workers.
‘‘The community came together. There were many acts of kindness and compassion during the hard times of lockdown and high levels of infection.
‘‘It’s never too late to recognise the generosity, support and care given by individuals and groups to those in need in difficult times.
‘‘These awards are a way of saying thank you for making us all proud of the spirit of community in our lovely town.”
The town councill and the Chronicle are also grateful to local business David Taylor Garages who kindly sponsored two awards.
A spokesperson for the company said: ‘‘The new ‘Community in Kindness’ awards organised by The Abergavenny Chronicle have been set up to recognise some very special people who go above and beyond when it comes to helping family, friends, neighbours and even strangers.
‘‘Over the last two years especially, members of our community in and around Abergavenny have gone out of their way to support others throughout the pandemic.
‘‘The local community has always been important to us here at David Taylor Garages and we are honoured to support such a great cause. To show our support and give something back we decided to sponsor two out of the 11 award categories, ‘Volunteer of the Year’ and ‘Heart of the Community’.
‘‘We were overwhelmed by the number of nominations for both of these categories and found it very difficult to choose one nominee from each category.
‘‘Well done to everyone who was nominated.’’
