The Monmouthshire Hunt kept the traditional New Year’s Day meet alive despite the weather working against them.

12 horses turned out for the annual gathering at Monmouth Castle, courtesy of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (M) MON and a number of well-wishers braved the weather to enjoy the sight of the hounds and to enjoy nibbles provided by hunt supporters.

One of the horses was ridden by newcomer to the area, Ruby, who’s horse Rosie had been brought in by mum from their home in Llanover.

“It’s a lovely venue,” said mum, “and it’s such a lovely area.”

Leading the event was Charlie Dando, Master of the Hounds and Tim the Kennel Master along with Masters Mrs Williams and Mrs Watkins and Glyn Bennett.

Master Huntsman Charlie Dando wished everyone a Happy New Year and thanked the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers Regiment for allowing them to meet at the castle.

“The weather has put an awful lot of people from turning up today, hopefully everybody here will not get too wet today,” he added.

“It’s a pleasure to be here and I’m sure we’ll be here next year.

“I’d like to thank the hunt supporters who have provided you with lots of food and drink and I hope you all fed and drank well.

“I wish you all a very Happy New Year and I hope you all had a great Christmas”.

The horses and hounds then made their way to Buckholt woods for a spot of trail hunting.
