There was a very high turnout of members and visitors for the May meeting when the Society welcomed Lucy Ellis, a National Demonstrator, from Bath with her theme Opera goes to the Movies Pt. 2.

The first arrangement was a placement on top of a tall slim, silver and black, oval container.

A low base of variegated laurel, fatsia, hellebore, soft conifer, a single palm leaf, begenia, dracaena and eleagnus provided the contrast for very tall red Antirrhinums , double black hellebores. Tall silver sprayed twisted hazel twigs, very large “Ever Ready red roses, white bloom carnations, purple spray carnations, white eustoma and purple antirrhinums completed the stunning display:

Quantum of Solace with an extract from Tosca.

Second:  Knives Out.  Another tall, grey, lightweight grey pot.  A low base of foliage with a fan placement of tall phormiums, a golden heuchra flower resembling antirrhinum, very tall orange tulips, pink bloom carnations and dark pink Cockscomb or “brain flowers”  completed the arrangement with an extract from La Traviata.

Third:  Artemis Fowl was interpreted on a large, lightweight wooden, narrow box.  The base of the arrangement was folded aspidistra leaves placed horizontally around the edge of the oasis.  Tall stems of lime green cornus; arum italicum, bergenia.  To this were added green fritillary blooms resembling delphiniums, lime green carnations and a deep green Armenia chrysanth, very similar to Anastasia.

Fourth:   Fracture.   A long, low, stone grey board with a deep fracture line formed the basis of this double arrangement.

Ferns, gold and green eleagnus, Ivanhoe grevillea to which were added dark purple lilac blooms, pittosporum, euonymous with white double eustoma, large yellow ranunculus, Norma Jean roses with particularly large blooms, white spray roses, purple spray carnations.  The fracture was represented by a single spray of purple cymbidium.

Last:  Out of Africa.  A large dark wooden African vase was used as the base with spathes, palm leaves, strelitzia leaves sprayed gold, green and pink dracaena leaves to which were added red

Callistemon or “bottlebrush” blooms, helarconiums, bronze chrysanths and curcumna flowers.

This was a particularly striking display with an extract from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto to end the demonstration.

The chairman Tineke Deuss invited Eileen Williams to give a vote of thanks for this very original demonstration.

The arrangements were all raffled off and everyone enjoyed light refreshments.

The next demonstration is at Bridges on Wednesday, June 8 when Delyth Price a National Demonstrator, from Carmarthen, will visit with her theme “My Floral Odyssey”.

All visitors are very welcome.  Doors open at 1.45pm for 2.15pm.
