November 5 was an important day for the Bridges Centre as they focused on raising awareness of dementia within the community. Many people are aware of the memory issues that go alongside the illness, but there are a variety of different physical difficulties that can occur and, unfortunately, the illness is progressive and irreversible.
Community volunteers and unpaid carers were invited to step inside the dementia bus and experience what it may be like to be living with dementia. Participants got an insight into the difficulties of living with this illness and will be able to provide loving care with renewed empathy.
According to the Alzheimer’s Society there are an estimated 982,000 people living with dementia in the UK and this is expected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. There are around 540,000 carers of people with dementia, and many living within Monmouthshire. Bridges Centre aims to provide support for the wellbeing of people in our local community, in particular the elderly and people at risk of isolation. As a ‘Dementia Friend’ organisation they provide a safe space for people living with dementia through activities and groups, such as Social Circles.
