On Sunday, June 30th, the gardens of Treowen, a Grade 1 Listed Jacobean Manor House in Wonastow, just outside Monmouth, will be open from 2-6pm as a special “pop up” event in aid of the National Garden Scheme’s (NGS) charities - a rare opportunity to visit this lovely house and garden which is not normally open to the public.
The gardens have beautiful herbaceous borders, a recently laid out parterre, a Ha Ha, a raised walk round the garden at the back of the house, countryside walks and restored medieval fishponds as well as breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside in all directions.
As the celebrated architectural historian, Mark Girouard wrote “There is something very moving about the distant view of Treowen, rising suddenly, high and lonely, out of the fields. It has no park, for it has been a farm since the 17th century, but the lack of elaborate setting suits its character. It is not a sophisticated building but strong, massive and generous. The depredations of time and fallen fortune have removed a good deal, but nothing has been added: everything that is there is genuine, unaltered work of its age.”
Treowen has a magnificent open well staircase rising the full four stories of the house, a priest hole, and splendid decorative plaster work. It has featured in many TV programmes, including several series of the BBC’s Dr Who, (with Drs David Tennant, Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker), “The Spanish Princess” on Amazon Prime and “A Discovery of Witches” on Netflix
Tours of the house and homemade teas, both in aid of St.Wonnow’s church, Wonastow will be available at an extra cost. Tickets for the garden visit cost £6 (children free) and you can either book in advance via the link below or pay on the day, when you can also book tours of the house and homemade teas. https://bookings.ngs.org.uk/book/3be8b9cd-779e-ee11-8126-00155d9dea00/
