They rely on the baskets in the supermarkets for food gifts, and these are given out to those people who have been provided with food vouchers by various organisations.
Mike Brain, a trustee of the registered charity explained.
"We work with the likes of doctors, social care workers, housing associations, the Community Hub, Monmouthshire County Council and Citizens Advice who offer food vouchers to those that are in financial need.
They then ring to us and we give them a week’s worth of food, depending on the size of the family.
"We’re not a long-term solution, we cannot help people forever, but what we try to do is help them until they get support from local government, so if you lose your job, you’ve gone to the council and have applied for state benefits, but meantime you have nothing coming in so this is where we step in.
"We can help an individual or a family until they can get benefits, which can take up to 10 weeks.
If someone cannot get hold of an agency quickly, we can take a phone call from them and arrange emergency cover.
As we are only open on a Friday, if someone is desperate, food can be collected from the Community Hub (the library) around the corner.
We can also signpost someone to the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) or a poverty debt charity if they are in a desperate state.
If they are homeless we can signpost them to the Community Hub, so they can hopefully get accommodation as quickly as possible.
The object of the exercise is so that people aren’t dependent on us or state benefits forever.
If someone is trying to find a job, we have connections with GAVO, (Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations ) and other organisations and we have connections with companies wh we know are looking for employees and that’s what we’ve been doing the last eight years.
He explained that supermarkets and individuals are their main source of food, "but we do go out a top up on essentials if we are low on something.
"All the supermarkets are happy to take donations whether it was bought in their store or not."
