FLORAL tributes have been laid after a man who was found unconscious in Monmouth town centre in the early hours of Sunday, June 26, died in hospital four days later.

A teenager who was one of three arrested following the incident at the top of Monnow Street has been charged with causing grevious bodily harm with intent.

Morgan Wainewright, 19, of Mid Summer Way, Monmouth, who has played rugby for Monmouth’s Druids, was remanded in custody after appearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday.

Two others arrested have been released: a 19-year-old on conditional bail, another 21-year-old without charge.

Gwent Police were called to reports of an assault at 1.15am a week last Sunday. They later confirmed that Andrew Nicholas, 43, from Poole, Dorset, had subsequently died in hospital.

Tributes on flowers left at the scene described Mr Nicholas as a “true gent” whose “infectious smile and personality (brought) so much happiness”.

Det Supt Nicholas Wilkie said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. His relatives are currently being supported by specialist officers. Our investigations continue.”

Anyone with information about the incident can call 101, quoting log 2200213333, message Gwent Police on Facebook or Twitter or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
