The Robinson brothers from Ross both won trophies last Sunday in the final last events of the Gloucestershire amateur junior fencing championships at Wycliffe College, Stroud. Following on from the foil events held at Bristol Grammar School in November of 2007, junior fencers from all over the county met to do battle in the epee and sabre events. Eight members of Gloucester Fencing Club made their assault on the three age group categories. In the epee, Ross-on-Wye fencer Alex Robinson competed in the under 16 boys event and was placed 3rd after a tense semi-final against the foil champion, Matthew Narey from Bristol Grammar School. In the Boys under 20 event, James Cox and Ross fencer Daniel Robinson met in an all Gloucester final. Daniel, who is currently number 7 at national under 20 level, showed why he is the county's top male foilist with a display of control and dominance which saw him take the title in emphatic style. In the sabre events that took place later in the day, only three Gloucester fencers were looking for the silverware. Alex Robinson was to turn the tables on Matthew Narey as he pulled away in the middle section of their under 16 final to take gold. This was the third county title the talented 14 year old has achieved after winning the foil events in 2004 & 2005. In the under 20 sabre final, Daniel Robinson once again proved too strong for his Bristol based opponent, Patrick Timoney. Daniel dominated the distance and timing to take the sabre title and remained undefeated all day in both competitions. Both fencers are coached by Shaun Garley. The Master-at-Arms trophies were awarded to the fencer with the best results over the three weapons during the current season. Daniel Robinson was ineligible this season, as he was not at the foil tournament back in November. Unfortunately, the talented 18 year old was away on international duty with the GB squad at the time. Daniel will be looking to defend his men's foil title for the third year running, when the senior fencers meet to do battle at the foil championships to be held at Marling School, Stroud on the 1st & 2nd March. Daniel and Alex would like to thank their sponsors Peter and Carole Crawford of HFT Forklifts Ltd. for their invaluable support, to P.E. teacher Mr. Chris Elias of John Kyrle High School for his help and advice and to Ready Steady Win.
