A FORMER Royal Marine Commando from Monmouth is undertaking a 300 mile solo charity trek for a cancer charity

Last week, Darren Roberts started his 300 mile solo trek from North to South Wales for the Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff.

The trek is dedicated to the memory of Darren’s late wife Shelly who passed away in November 2020 at the age of 51. She had been treated at Velindre since her cancer diagnosis in October 2016.

Starting at Conwy Castle and finishing at Cardiff Castle he will follow a route over the great Welsh mountain ranges: Snowdonia, Cambrian Mountains, Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.

Darren, originally from North Wales but now living in Monmouth, is a former Royal Marines Commando and an experienced mountaineer, having climbed in the Himalayas, Andes and throughout the European Alps. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Determined not ’to go gentle into that good night’, this trek will be one of his greatest challenges.

After the first day he posted on his Justgiving page that he had covered nearly 40km, firstly over the Carneddau range and staying at Idwal cottage YHA last night.

Wednesday June 22 saw him climb Tryfan and traverse the Glyderau.

“I’m at the Pen y Pass Youth Hostel tonight. I’m a bit knackered at the moment but I’ll be having a decent kip tonight. Thank you all for your support”
