Following Storm Bert over the weekend, Monmouthshire County Council's officers are working across the county to address the aftermath of the flooding.
The flood warning for the border village of Skenfrith was lifted today, November 26 having been downgraded the day before from the highest red flood alert.
As of yesterday, November 25, a significant change in the weather has improved the situation throughout the area, allowing for the reopening of many roads and services.
The storm caused widespread road closures throughout the county. While most of these roads have reopened, we advise anyone travelling to exercise caution, as debris from the flooding may still be present on the roads. For the latest information on road closures, please visit www.monmouthshire.gov.uk/storm-bert/.
The council's operations team has worked continuously throughout the weekend and today to clear the roads. However, this process will take several days to complete due to the high number of roads affected.
Our main priority is the safety of all residents in the county. We urge everyone travelling to adhere to the road closures for their own safety and that of others.
Care centres were put in place over the weekend to ensure that support was in place for those residents who had been displaced from their homes, as well as vulnerable residents receiving social care, community meals and other services.
Monmouthshire County Council's Leader, Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby, stated: "This weekend has seen some of the worst rain and flooding across Monmouthshire. Once again, our residents have demonstrated their strength by supporting one another. I thank everyone who heeded the advice and assisted their neighbours."
"As conditions improve today, council officers are working throughout the county to remove debris and assess and respond to the damage caused by the flooding."
"I extend my gratitude to those officers who worked tirelessly throughout the weekend and to the emergency services and volunteer agencies for their collective response. Your efforts have ensured that Monmouthshire remains accessible so everyone can travel safely."
