THE atmospheric World Heritage site of Blaenavon Ironworks will provide the stunning backdrop to an immersive sonic experience of “suspense, shifting sounds and poetry” this weekend.

Funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Oxford Contemporary Music, Warning Notes is described as “a pulsing, gorgeous and threatening world woven out of sound sculptures and beautiful, rhythmic notes”.

Artists Mark Anderson and Liam Walsh, and creative collaborators Grug Muse (Welsh language poet and performer) and Marega Palser (dancer), create a “hypnotic” and at times playful show for all ages, using an ensemble of striking mechanical ‘instruments – gongs, bells, whistles and explosions – with poetry and text.

The iconic ironworks helped build the industrial world, but we are now reaping the rewards of climate change and extreme social injustice, say the creators.

And as day turns to night, the ever changing outdoor performance "creates a rich and powerful soundscape that gives voice to the current social and ecological alarm that ripples across our world".

One reviewer says: “Anderson has spent his professional career creating audio visual alchemy that uses light, heat, vibrations, electricity, oscillating chemicals and paraphernalia to dazzle our eyes and startle our imaginations.”

The event is on Friday and Saturday (September 20-21) with three shows each night at 6.30pm, 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Tickets £3-5 are available on the night or via cadw.gov.wales/warning-notes
