KNIGHTS of old will be storming the ramparts this weekend, when English Heritage welcome Fighting Knights to Goodrich Castle, which will see two chivalric warriors battling it out for glory.
Visitors can come and watch the brave knights get donned in their armour, before putting their strength and skill to the test in combat shows on Saturday-Sunday, August 17-18.
There will also be interactive family activities for everyone to step back in time to the castle’s medieval heyday.
Children can also take part in Goodrich Castle’s Summer Explorer Quest throughout the holidays, which sets challenges for young adventurers to complete during their visit.
Ella Harrison, Events Manager at English Heritage, said: “We know there’s nothing quite so magical as watching our historical performers do battle in a spectacular heritage site, so we’re very pleased to be holding Fighting Knights at Goodrich Castle.
"We hope the event will bring to life what it was like in the castle centuries ago for visitors.”
The castle was first built in the 10th century and then rebuilt in the 13th century, located in a strategic and beautiful spot overlooking a crossing point of the River Wye.
Despite being sieged in the Civil War, it remains one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles.
And it contains the only surviving mortar from the Civil War, named Roaring Meg.
Pick up a free audio guide that will take you through the ruins of the castle, before enjoying lunch and cakes in the tearoom.
Entry to Fighting Knights is included in the price of admission. English Heritage and Cadw members go free and and non-members can save 15 per cent by booking online.
