Chepstow Agricultural Show went ahead as planned earlier this month at the hieight of the heatwave with precautions in place because of the very hot weather.

One of the highlights of the show, which dates back to 1841, the grand parade of livestock was cancelled to prevent unnecessary discomfort for the animals.

Gazebos provided shade for the cattle and sheep being shown and there was plenty of water for the animals.

One lucky group – the Woolaston Bassetts – even had air conditioning.

There was a big turnout for the event at Chepstow Racecourse with Chepstow Agricultural Society providing a free bus service from the town centre.

As well as the animals, the main ring attractions included stunt riders on horses and on bikes, the Curre and Llangibby pony clubs and a parade of vintage vehicles.

There were also displays of horticulture and homecrafts with cups on offer for best, food and craft tents and many trade stands.

It was the first show since 2019 – when exhibitors and visitors had to contend with cold and rain.

In the rather different conditions of Saturday, show announcer John Lewis explained how the animals were being looked after.

He said: “In the livestock section all the cattle have nice gazebos, they have masses of water and some are being sprayed

“There will not be a grand parade because we will not be putting them in the main ring at the height of the heat.

The farmers are doing a lot to look after the welfare of their stock.

“If they weren’t here in those conditions they would be in a field

“The farmers go to tremendous lengths to put their livestock first

and Woolaston Bassets have a machine with lovely cold air.

“They are nice and cool with air conditioning around them and its not the full pack so the others have more space.”

Chepstow Rotary Club had a raffle at the show which raised £750 for the Ukranian support appeal.

Their stand also featured the sound of a pipe organ built by member Geoff Morris.

Show chairman Scott Coates said: “It is great to be back after not running a show in 2020 and 2021.

“We have tried to make sure we come back with a bang.

“The show is wholly dependent on volunteers to organise, set up, run and take down..

‘‘I therefore extend my greatest thanks to everyone who has helped with this year’s show.

“I would also like to thank our generous sponsors for their contributions.”
