Tributes are being paid on social media to staff and owner of a treasured village post office.
Raglan’s post office, run for many years by D and M Watkins, will be moving across the road next month to the Gulf fuel garage following a public consultation by the Post Office Ltd.
Andrew Watkins, who ran the supermarket and post office along with his late father Dilwyn for many years, has retired with the Nisa supermarket closing last November and returning as a Tesco-branded Express branch earlier this year.
The current Raglan Post office will mark the end of an era with its closure at 12:30 on Saturday, 5th October 2024, and the new branch opening over the road at the Gulf station, at 1pm on Monday, 7th October 2024.
The fear was that if the consultation did not get enough public support in retaining the post office facility in the ever-growing village, the result could be that the service would cease to exist in Raglan altogether.
Colwyn Knight, Chair of the Raglan Festival Committee said : “Andrew and his staff should be aware of the excellent service they have provided for the village over the years. We will miss them .”
Another, Fiona Mulhall posted : “Thank you Andrew, Hayley and family for many years of an amazing service.
