The county councillor for the Llanbadoc and Usk Ward, has welcomed the long-awaited commencement of redesigned drainage and active travel works at Monmouth Road, Usk—almost two years after flash flooding impacted the area.
Cllr Tony Kear said that the scheme, which follows a constructive and collaborative approach between MCC officers and stakeholders, will introduce significant improvements, including: New improved drainage infrastructure to enhance flood resilience; A wider pedestrian pavement to support active travel and improve accessibility; A new crossing point to enhance safety for users of the Factory Lane allotments; Camber-altering resurfacing of the carriageway to improve road safety and drainage efficiency and support road safety to tackle speeding vehicles .
He said: “After nearly two years of discussions, I am delighted to see these much needed works finally commence. I have been made aware of genuine concerns of school children getting soaked from the flooding road on their way to school, excess surface water coming down from the privately owned Little Castle Lane and the worries of homeowners particularly those affected in May 2023.
“During my onsite meetings with officers, the aim has been to address them in one solution. Whilst this scheme does not address the disquiet raised about the adjacent proposed 40 houses within the RLDP for Usk, the improvements will not only address the longstanding drainage issues on Monmouth Road but enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility there both to Factory Lane allotment holders and families walking to Usk Primary School as well as partly addressing the known issue of speeding vehicles.
“I want to thank MCC officers for their constructive approach in bringing forward a scheme that balances both resilience and active travel benefits for the community.”
The works mark a significant step towards mitigating flood risks for existing residents and enhancing the overall infrastructure in Usk, ensuring long-term safety benefits for residents.
